Demetris Michael, was born in New York and was raised in Larnaca, Cyprus. He started Byzantine chanting from the age of 8. At the age of 18 he earned his diploma from the
Hellenic Conservatory in Larnaca for piano, singing, and harmony. After serving in the army, Demetris attended the University of Nicosia where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in classical singing and piano performance with the highest possible scholarship for one of the best auditions.
In 2016 Demetris continued his studies and obtained his diploma in Byzantine Chanting from the Synchronous Conservatory of Crete. From October, 2007 until January, 2016 Demetris was a chanter at the Old Metropolis of Larnaca “Saint John the Evangelist” as well as a teacher at the Hellenic Conservatory of Larnaca teaching piano, singing and theory. Demetris also conducted the school’s choir, concerts, and created recordings. He was the president and coordinator of students for the European Association of Music for 2 years. During that time, Demetris represented the University of Nicosia in Leuven, Belgium and in Nicosia, Cyprus for the conferences. In 2014 and 2015 Demetris was chosen to be one of two tenors in Cyprus to sing in the choir Opera “Così Fan Tutte” and “La Cenerentola” for two consequent years at Aphrodite’s festival in Paphos, Cyprus. He also sang in various other concerts such as, German Lieder for the Austrian Ambassador in Cyprus and Italian Arias for the Italian festival of Opera.
Demetris moved to New York in Feb 2016 and has continued performing in various concerts for the Pancyprian Choir of New York as well as Martha Tompoulidou. He is a member of the CNY Productions music group that have done concerts/performances for the Ronald McDonald Foundation, Athens Square Park and the most recent “Tribute to Mikis Theodorakis” concert at Carnegie Hall. He is also the Protopsaltis at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Whitestone.
