Dimitrios Katsiklis is a professional cantor and teacher of Byzantine Music as well as a researcher in the field of Byzantine Musicology, holding a Diploma in Byzantine Music by Emmanuel Hatzimarkos (2006). Born in Volos, Greece, in 1983 he began at the age of 8 learning Byzantine Music with M. Meletis of blessed memory, at the Byzantine Music School of Volos. In 1995 he was tonsured a Reader at the Cathedral of Volos by the late Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and all Greece, who was the Metropolitan of Volos at that time. Dimitrios is a graduate of the Ecclesiastical Highschool of Volos and of the Athoniada Academy on Mt. Athos where he studied Byzantine Music with the monks of both the Vatopedi and Philotheou Monasteries, at the Skete of Karyes and close to the Brotherhood of Daniel (Δανιηλαίοι). From 1999 to 2004 as a hypotaktikos at St. Anthony’s Monastery, Florence, AZ, he studied chanting next to Hieromonk Ephraim and he served as a main cantor at the monastery. He holds a BSc degree in Pastoral Studies from the University Ecclesiastical Academy of Athens, where he studied Byzantine Music with Dr. K. Karagounis. Dimitrios is a MSc graduate in Theology & Byzantine Historical Musicology, with focus on the Athonite chanting tradition, at the Pastoral and Social Theology Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, under Dr. S. Paschalidis, Dr. A. Chaldaiakis and Dr. J. Liakos, and a MSc in Business Administration from the Hellenic American University, New Hampshire, NH. Dimitrios also followed the master classes in Byzantine Music at the Athens Conservatory of Athens, Greece under Dr. George Konstantinou. Since 1991 Dimitrios has served as a cantor in many Orthodox churches including parishes of the Metropolis of Demetrias, Volos, Greece, the Archdiocese of Athens and on Mt. Athos at the Ancient Church of Protato, Karyes. The Athonite community, officially invited him, between the years 2004-2019 together with the monastic brotherhoods around the Karyes area on feast days, and at the Athoniada high school chapel. He also performed on many occasions, at the Ecumenical Patriarchate, in various parishes and at the St. George Church, as a student of the Athoniada Academy. Dimitrios chanted professionally a) at St. Nicholas, Cathedral of Volos, Greece, as a Reader and Domestikos, from 1995-1999, again from 2005-2007 and as Lampadarios in 2007, next to his teacher Protopsaltis M. Meletis, b) at St. Nektarios Chapel, of the Metropolis of Demetrias, as a Protopsaltis in 2005, c) at St. Katherine in Petralona, Greece as a Lampadarios in 2008 with Daniel Karabasis as Protopsaltis, d) at St. Demetrios Parish, Palaio Psychiko, Greece as a Lampadarios in 2008 with Fr. Augustine Zisimos as Protopsaltis, e) at the Holy Synodical Monastery of Petraki, Athens, Greece, as a Lampadarios from 2008-2013 with Ioannis Plevritis and Ioannis Christou as Protopsaltes, f) at St. Savvas Church of the Cancer Institute of Athens as a Protopsaltis from 2013 to 2019. He currently serves St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Tucson, Arizona, as the Protopsaltis since 2019. Dimitrios has been a member of the chanting ensemble “Maistores of the Psaltic Art ” founded in 1983 by Prof. Dr. Gregorios Stathis, with the latest conductor being Prof. Dr. Achilleas Chaldaiakis. This choir of academic excellence and performance, consisted of selected members, with countless appearances all around the world and numerous recordings, under the Faculty of Musicology of the University of Athens and the Foundation of Byzantine Musicology of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece. Dimitrios has also participated in many occasions with different ensembles as well such as the Byzantine Choir “Dynamis” with Samuel Herron, the Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the “Antifonikon Melos”, with George Kamariaris, the Byzantine Choir “Tropos” with Kostas Angelidis, the Byzantine Choir of the Archdicese of Greece with George Demelis, the “St. John Koukouzelis” choir of Volos, and the “St. Joseph” choir of Arizona and has extensively participated in Byzantine Music Productions in both Greek and English with all the above mentioned ensembles. Dimitrios currently teaches Byzantine Music at the Three Hierarchs Academy of Arizona, based in Florence, AZ, which is the first K-8 school in America with a full Byzantine Music curriculum that he created, and has cooperated with the Trisagion School of Chant in offering Private Lessons. Dimitrios is fluent in Greek and English and holds a Proficiency Degree in English from the University of Michigan and an English Composition Degree from the University of the People, California.
